Joint crop and livestock services for smallholder farmers https://site.cabi.org/projects/joint-crop-and-livestock-services-for-smallholder-farmers/ Wed, 19 May 2021 12:05:49 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/?post_type=project&p=2988197 Crop and livestock health is crucial to agricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods. However, in low-income countries, smallholders are often left without sufficient support to deal with crop and animal problems due to existing agricultural extension services being understaffed and underfunded. CABI’s work in plant health and plant clinics over the last 15 years has revealed potential ‘One Health’ (OH) benefits of broadening the scope of plant clinics to better meet farmers’ need for advice. This project will develop integrated crop-livestock health advisory services that will enable male and female smallholder farmers in Uganda to address major health and production problems affecting crops, livestock, and food safety.

Using insects to improve smallholders livestock production and food security in West Africa https://site.cabi.org/projects/using-insects-to-improve-smallholders-livestock-production-and-food-security-in-west-africa/ Mon, 22 Jun 2015 08:59:05 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/project/using-insects-to-improve-smallholders%c2%92-livestock-production-and-food-security-in-west-africa/ Poultry farming is practised by almost all smallholder farmers in West Africa but feed and protein sources are becoming increasingly expensive here, affecting meat and egg production and reducing family income. Fish farmers suffer a similar problem. We are promoting the use of insects, which are a natural food source for poultry and fish, and endorsed by the FAO as a tool to alleviate poverty.
