Ecological intensification of smallholder farms in Kenya https://site.cabi.org/projects/ecological-intensification-of-smallholder-farms-in-kenya/ Fri, 11 Oct 2019 14:47:38 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/?post_type=project&p=157480 There is limited knowledge on the agronomic potential of biodiversity-based ecosystem services such as natural pest control and pollination in smallholder systems. To sustainably intensify production, there is an urgent need to develop safe, sustainable and affordable methods to reduce pest burdens whilst increasing yields.

Integrating advanced Earth Observation and environmental information for sustainable pest and disease management https://site.cabi.org/projects/earth-observation-forecasting-for-crop-pests-and-diseases-in-china/ Fri, 11 Oct 2019 13:46:10 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/?post_type=project&p=157451 Forecasting and monitoring insect pests and disease outbreaks is vital for protecting China’s economically important agricultural sector. By combining information gathered from Earth Observation and environmental data, CABI and partners will design innovative data products and communications tools to help decision makers sustainably manage wheat yellow rust and migratory locusts. A biopesticide development model will also be developed to help end-users decide when to use a biopesticide over a chemical pesticide.

LEGATO: rice ecosystem services https://site.cabi.org/projects/legato-rice-ecosystem-services/ Thu, 08 Oct 2015 14:25:57 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/project/legato-rice-ecosystem-services/ As a staple food crop in South East Asia, rice is a key driver of the countries' economies and essential to the diets and livelihoods of the billions of people who live here. We are involved in a five-year project that aims to measure the interdependence of ecosystem functions and services generated by long-term, intensive, irrigated rice fields here.

Increasing rice production around the Mekong https://site.cabi.org/projects/increasing-rice-production-around-the-mekong/ Wed, 17 Sep 2014 08:03:56 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/project/increasing-rice-production-around-the-mekong/ Rice is the most important crop in southwestern China, Laos and Myanmar. Despite recent improvements, productivity is still low with millions of tons lost to pests, diseases and weeds. Intensive pesticide use has led to insecticide resistance, outbreaks of secondary pests and damage to farmers' health. This project is introducing a biologically based pest management approach to safely and sustainably increase rice production, improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the region.

Optimizing Fertilizer Recommendations in Africa (OFRA) https://site.cabi.org/projects/optimizing-fertilizer-recommendations-in-africa-ofra/ Wed, 17 Sep 2014 08:01:21 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/project/optimizing-fertilizer-recommendations-in-africa-ofra/ Soil fertility across much of sub-Saharan Africa is poor, which is a major constraint to improving farm productivity and farmer livelihoods. To combat this there is now wide recognition of the need to integrate increased fertilizer use with other aspects of soil fertility management. This project aims to contribute to improved efficiency and profitability of fertilizer use within the context of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) practices.
