In 2023, 60% of exports, which included fresh fruit and vegetables, were to the EU, worth 58 million euros. However, despite the notable exports, Uganda has a limited share of the EU market. This is due to produce being intercepted and rejected because it does not meeting the required Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards. CABI is working in collaboration with partners to strengthen the capacity of Ugandan authorities and private sector organizations to comply with SPS measures for domestic and export markets with the aim of increasing trade, safeguarding health and increasing income and employment opportunities.

Rapid appraisal of the financing landscape for the coffee sector in Africa https://site.cabi.org/projects/rapid-appraisal-of-the-financing-landscape-for-the-coffee-sector-in-africa/ Tue, 14 Mar 2023 14:40:24 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/?post_type=project&p=3027827 The coffee sector in Africa provides a vital source of income for many smallholder farmers and accounts for a large proportion of export income for many countries. However, access to finance for production, in-country processing and marketing of coffee is one of the main challenges limiting the transformation of the African coffee sub-sector into a vibrant and resilient industry. CABI is undertaking a study aimed at finding ways to overcome these challenges by determining the best models for financing the micro and small to medium enterprises, and individual smallholder producers of the African coffee value chains.

Strengthening food security post COVID-19 pandemic and locust attack https://site.cabi.org/projects/strengthening-food-security-post-covid-19-and-locust-attacks/ Mon, 20 Dec 2021 14:20:29 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/?post_type=project&p=3003260 Thirty-seven percent of Pakistan's population is already vulnerable to food insecurity. This figure will soon exacerbate given the effect of recent external challenges including the rapid spread of Covid-19 and its subsequent Government restrictions, and Pakistan’s largest locust infestation in 25 years devasting large areas of agricultural land, including cotton, wheat, maize, and other crops. Adding to this turmoil is recent extreme weather events which have demonstrated that Pakistan’s food security and agriculture are critically exposed to the adverse impacts of climate change. In this project, CABI will support the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) and four provincial agriculture departments in adopting technologies and advanced practices to manage these impacts, disseminating technologies and practices to stakeholders and recommending measures for building long-term resilience and sustainable food security.

Building the policy ecosystem for organic production in Balochistan, Pakistan https://site.cabi.org/projects/building-the-policy-ecosystem-for-organic-production-in-balochistan-pakistan/ Wed, 29 Sep 2021 12:19:23 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/?post_type=project&p=3000834 Sectoral approaches to land management (increasing production, for instance) are no longer viable to meet global challenges such as poverty alleviation, biodiversity conservation and food production due to mounting pressures from population increases and climate change. Organic production, however, is a more profitable, sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach to agriculture that alleviates problems. This project will focus on integrated landscape approaches and will use CABI’s strong in-country partnerships to integrate agricultural policy change, strengthen market linkages and ultimately enable business model change for organic produce production in the Balochistan province of Pakistan.

Capacity building of small-scale potato growers in Punjab, Pakistan https://site.cabi.org/projects/capacity-building-of-small-scale-potato-growers-in-punjab-pakistan/ Wed, 22 Sep 2021 11:24:45 +0000 https://site.cabi.org/?post_type=project&p=3000347 Potato is an important crop in Pakistan for both consumers and producers. It is nutritious, produces high returns and there is a potential to increase yields by using good potato cultivation practices. However, a lack of knowledge concerning these is inhibiting many smallholder farmers in their effort to raise productivity. Furthermore, unsuitable management of threats, such as pests and diseases, increases losses. In this project, CABI aims to mitigate challenges faced in the smallholder potato sector by building the capacity of small-scale potato growers, and in particular women, in good agricultural practices, including the sustainable and safe use of pesticides, in the Punjab province of Pakistan.
